Stafford Mayor upset by headline

Dear Editor,

When I opened the September 5, edition of the “Fort Bend/Southwest Star“, I was stunned to see the headline, “Three cent tax rate increase for City of Stafford”.

I recognize that often times the headlines are written by other than the journalist writing the article. However, this city has endeavored for more than 15 years to have no city property tax. As you well know, we are very proud of that fact. It is most disconcerting for the “Star” to send a message throughout this county and beyond that the “City of Stafford” is raising its taxes by three cents.

There is no other implication which can be construed from that headline other than the City of Stafford is imposing property taxes and raising those property taxes by three cents.

I would respectfully request that a retraction as recognizable as that headline be included in the next edition of the Star retracting the headline and acknowledging that mistake.

I sincerely appreciate the excellent coverage you and the “Star “provide Stafford. This is a most unfortunate error. Thank you for your consideration.

Leonard Scarcella
Mayor, City of Stafford

Editor’s Note: Mayor Scarcella, please accept our apology regarding the headline in the last issue of the “Star“. A retraction to this error is on our front page of today’s edition.
