Great parent turnout at SMSD Board Meeting

By Karen Daniels

There’s a saying “If you build it, they will come.” This couldn’t be more true for Stafford MSD. Parents who spoke at the September board meeting to Dr. Hindt and the Trustees had concerns as well as praise for the District so far. Attendance for all schools at the time of the meeting was at 3,352, (two hundred more than last year) and due to the constant growth since the start of school, balancing kids per class has to be continually altered until the ideal per student ratio is completed.

Currently, eleven new teachers are being hired. Once construction is completed, there will be plenty of room for the increase of students, in the meantime, the District is asking for patience.

The following are the concerns parents shared:

• When will books and lockers be assigned? By the time you are reading this, all books will have been distributed and lockers allocated. Not to blame everything on construction, but the high school staff could not get into the school until two weeks prior to school.

• Is four minutes between classes enough? Walking from Point A to Z can be accomplished in this amount of time (4:30 is the time). If it is a matter of using the bathroom, Dr. Hindt assured no child would be denied, but asked that they go to class first and get a pass.

• Is the school in compliance with safety and fire codes? The fire marshal has been to all schools and the District is in compliance. The ratio for Pre-K – 4th is 22:1 and 5th – 12th is 25:1.

• Are there enough desks and supplies? New desks have been ordered to accommodate the influx and have already arrived. The District has no shortage of books.

Assistant Superintendent Marva Rasberry informed the board that the State is requesting more bully prevention and college and career readiness class time. Bond updates were given and so far the district is on time, on schedule and on budget. A vote to keep the board seat vacant until May passed unanimously.
