The Arc of Fort Bend County receives $25,000 grant

The Arc of Fort Bend County has received a $25,000 grant from The Fondren Foundation. The grant will be applied toward the purchase of a multi-passenger van/bus to be used by The Arc to transport clients to and from activities, programs and events such as recreational and social events and Special Olympics competitions.

“We are thrilled to have the support of The Fondren Foundation,” says The Arc’s Executive Director, Laura LaVigne. “Most of our clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Fort Bend County are trapped in their homes due to lack of transportation when their parents, caregivers or providers are unable to provide transportation With this new vehicle, we will be able to continue to provide them with a sense of freedom and a sense of belonging to the community. The generosity of The Fondren Foundation is going to aid hundreds of our clients and their families for years to come and help us continue in our mission of ‘Quality of Life for All.”

“We have a battered 1997, 15-passenger van, which we converted to a 12-passenger van. We plan to use the funds from The Fondren Foundation to replace it with a 15-passenger bus, which has lower doors making it easier to access for our aging clients and those with limited mobility. The bus will transport entire Special Olympic teams to competitions, saving the cost of renting multiple vans. Our Special Olympics program provides a year-round sports training program for more than 100 adult athletes. We will also be able to transport those clients who live in the community to social/recreational events at Reliant Stadium, Toyota Center, Compass Stadium, Minute Maid Park and the Ft. Bend County Fairgrounds. Our Social-Recreational program provides opportunities for 150 clients to attend and enjoy the wealth of sporting and entertainment events offered in the greater Houston area. Programs like these provide quality of life for our client community. The support from The Fondren Foundation makes it possible for The Arc to provide these programs.
