Global Studies Academy students earn travel grants

Seven students enrolled in the Global Studies Academy at Clements High School (including a 2012 graduate) immersed themselves in cultural experiences as they traveled abroad to select countries this summer. The students were recipients of travel grants presented by the Global Studies Academy Booster Club, which helped fund trips to support the students’ study of various languages and cultures.

The 2012 travel grant recipients and the countries they visited include: Edbony Colemon (Japan), Leah Emerson (Spain), 2012 graduate Ryan Foley (Germany), Alyza King (France), Mariana Molina (Germany), Nicholas Senften (Spain) and Bonnie Worstell (Germany). They are among the Academy’s first group of grant recipients.

Throughout the course of the school year, each of the students will share details of their trip during Global Studies Academy Booster Club/Parent meetings, which are held the first Thursday of each month. In February, the academy will award new travel grants for the upcoming summer.

The Global Studies Academy at Clements High School gives students the opportunity to study one of six world languages of their choice, including Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin or Spanish. The Academy also gives students the opportunity to take part in exchange programs, community service projects, mentorship and internship programs with international businesses and agencies, as well as participate in local and state contests, international festivals, virtual field trips via distance learning, and language clubs and honor societies.

All upcoming ninth-graders within FBISD, who are interested in attending the Global Studies Academy or any other FBISD academy during the 2013-2014 school year are invited to attend FBISD’s Academy Expo, which will be held October 24, at Wheeler Field House, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
