Learn to talk like a pirate with Mango Languages resources

Arrrgh-righty, landlubbers! Learn the language of seadogs (and other foreign languages) online, at your own pace, using Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mango Languages interactive learning tool. The Adult Services staff at the University Branch Library will present an introductory program, “Learn to Talk Like a Pirate… Using Mango Languages,” on Wednesday, October 31, beginning at 10:30 am, in the Computer Lab at the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. Library staff will demonstrate how to set up a free account and begin using this easy-to-use learning resource.

Mango Languages offers online courses for people who would like to learn a new language – including Pirate!  The online resource is self-paced and designed for practicality and simplicity. A “virtual tutor” guides the student through each step of the way as they learn actual conversation skills using real-life scenarios. An audio feature enables the student to hear how words are pronounced.

The resource includes 22 languages — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Hebrew, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic (Levantine), Farsi, Pashto, Urdu, Dari, Turkish, Tagalog, Hindi, and Irish, in addition to Pirate.

The class is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. To register online at the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “Calendar,” select “University Branch,” and find the program. Participants may also register by calling the library at 281-633-5100, or by visiting the library.
