Since 2006, a diverse group of Fort Bend County leaders have been meeting with a specific purpose—creating a college-going culture in their community.
The P-16 Council was founded with the mission of having more Fort Bend County students attend and complete college. P-16 stands for Pre-school through grade 16, or the fourth year of college. The group, made up of leaders among non-profit groups, school districts, colleges, faith- based organizations, businesses, and government entities hopes to spur positive change and lead educational policies that promote success in life.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has recognized the Fort Bend P-16 group as a 2012 Regional Council.

“As a school superintendent, I know that community involvement is one of the keys to academic success,” said Dr. Thomas Randle, superintendent of Lamar CISD and chairman of the executive board of the P-16 Council. “This group wants everyone to know that education is important to our community, and not just for those families with school-aged children.”

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board provides leadership and coordination for the Texas higher education system. It includes the P-16 Initiatives Division and works to increase the participation and success of all Texans in college. With diverse community leadership, the P-16 Councils are focused on reaching out to Texas families about the importance of going to college and what it takes to be successful in college and beyond.
