LiveStrong Texas 4000 2013 Ride Team will ride bicycles to Alaska

Riding for the fight against cancer

Dear Editor,

My name is Valerie Do, and my family has lived in Sugar Land for nearly 18 years. I spent most of my childhood and my entire adolescence exploring the neighborhood streets with my classmates. I recall fondly my years at Dickinson Elementary then Campbell and all the way up to my graduation at Lamar Consolidated. I am now a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in history.

In the beginning of next summer (a week after I will have walked across the stage to receive my Bachelors), I and 70 other UT students, will leave on a 70 day bike ride to journey across the country from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska to raise hope, knowledge, and charity in the fight against cancer. We are a part of the LiveStrong Texas 4000 2013 Ride team.

I am contacting you to request your aid in helping me raise hope and charity in the Greatwood community. Greatwood, through my years of experience, I know is a growing but tight-knit community. I still keep in contact and regularly see a few of my 3rd grade classmates. I would love to reach out to the entire neighborhood to inform each resident about my journey. For many, cancer is a mysterious disease that can often mean a certain death sentence.

I and my fellow riders want people to know that that is not the case. Though we may have once lost loved ones to cancer, we are fighting to spread knowledge– through screenings and early detection, cancer can be caught and cured in its early stages; we are fighting to spread hope– cancer is not a death sentence, millions of people have survived to see many many more years, and we are fighting to increase those numbers.

We are fighting to raise charity– each rider is expected to fundraise $4,500–one dollar for every mile we will ride– with 94 cents of every dollar going directly to fund cancer research (MD Anderson is one of our primary recipients). I am looking to spread the word about my organization through as many mediums possible. If you would like to learn more about my organization, feel free to visit our website at www.texas4000.org or visit my profile page also located at the bottom of my signature.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit with partnerships with LiveStrong, Pfizer Oncology, and MD Anderson. Each year a new group of students plan every last detail of their upcoming ride summer, from hosts, food, donations, and routes. I would love to get the word out there.

Yours in the fight against cancer,
Valerie Do
