Sugar Land receives 2012 Atlantic League honors

The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced today that Skeeters Team President Matt O’Brien was named co-recipient of the 2012 General Manager of the Year Award and named Constellation Field as Atlantic League Park of the Year.

O’Brien received the General Manager of the Year Award, along with York Revolution President Eric Menzer, following Sugar Land’s inaugural season in 2012. A veteran of minor league baseball, O’Brien has been affiliated with the Skeeters ownership group, Opening Day Partners, and the Atlantic League for over 10 years.

Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters and Atlantic League Park of the Year, opened its gates in late April 2012 and quickly gained popularity for its family-friendly atmosphere, affordable sources of entertainment and state-of-the-art facilities. The park hosted an Atlantic League-record 465,511 in attendance this season, while unique features such as the bullpen cart helped the park gain national recognition.

Earlier this month, Constellation Field was also chosen via fan vote for Baseball America’s 2013 Great Parks Calendar, while the organization was named a runner-up for Baseball Digest’s 2012 Organization of the Year.
“It’s very nice to be recognized by the League and I’m happy to accept this award on behalf of the entire cast and crew of our production,” O’Brien said. “Special congratulations to Director of Operations Michael Kirk, Head Groundskeeper Brad Detmore and their respective staffs. We continue to be very proud of Constellation Field and behind every award is a lot of hard work.”

Also announced by the League today was the 2012 Atlantic League All-Star Team. Skeeters third baseman Ofilio Castro, outfielder Bubba Bell and right-handed closer Gary Majewski were each picked at their respective positions as Second Team All-Star selections. Castro finished the season with a .306 average and registered the first-ever grand slam home run in Skeeters history. Castro also led the club in batting average, hits (143) and games played (124). Bell led Sugar Land with 11 stolen bases on the season and was the only Skeeter to make over 100 starts at a single position without committing an error. Majewski, who transitioned from middle relief to the closer role in 2012, converted the second-most saves in the Atlantic League this season with 25.
