Quail Valley Middle School sixth-grade students welcomed author Chitra Divakaruni to their campus to learn about her writing experiences. Divakaruni is an award-winning author of numerous books for children and adult readers. She also teaches creative writing classes at the University of Houston. Students Milan Mitra and Vincent Liu sought out the author in hopes that she would visit their class to enlighten them about her experiences writing the book, The Conch Bearer, which was selected as their summer reading book.
During her visit, Divakaruni shared her background in writing, facts about her Indian culture (including the various languages spoken), and spoke of how her characters are developed. She also reminded students that “writing is a necessary skill for any career you choose in life.” Following her presentation, Divakaruni autographed copies of her books for students.
