First Colony Middle School supports “Pinwheels for Peace”

In support of International Day of Peace, held in September, First Colony Middle School students took part in the Pinwheels for Peace Project by constructing paper pinwheels and displaying them on their school’s front lawn. The international art and literacy project allowed students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world, and in their own personal lives by designing pinwheels that included messages of peace.

FCMS’ cheerleading team, pep squad and PALS led their school’s efforts by creating pinwheels of all shapes and sizes, then writing on back of the objects their thoughts about war and peace, tolerance, living in harmony with others, and so on. On the front side of the pinwheel, students included drawings, paintings and collages to express their feelings regarding peace. Then on International Day of Peace, the students “planted” their pinwheels as a public statement and art exhibit for all to see.

Last year, more than four million pinwheels were seen spinning in approximately 3,500 locations throughout the United States and other countries across the globe.
