SMSD’s offers success at Quest Academy

By Karen Daniels

Due to circumstances beyond their control, some students cannot adhere to the daily schedule required for traditional high school. The Quest Academy at Stafford MSD offers Stafford residents an alternative to earning their diploma. The school is open from 7:00am to 5:00pm and students must earn a minimum of 20 hours per week in order to stay in the program, but their schedule is allowed to be flexible.

Quest is an academic program using the web-based, Ed-Options plan, and not an alternative discipline program.

There are rules and qualifications, and priority is given to students who’ve been in high-school five or more years, then seniors, then juniors. A selection committee comprised of the principal and selected members choose students who are sixteen or older, have twelve credit hours, and are considered at-risk for dropping out. Students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional high school curriculum can find success with Quest. If accepted, the students will develop an individualized two-year course. Enrollment in this program provides access for students to participate in extra-curricular activities and benefit from the career and college readiness opportunities.

Quest Academy has had 28 students enrolled. Of that, 18 are considered current, , and 5 have graduated with a high-school diploma, after passing all state mandated assessments (10 did not achieve the minimum number of hours). A student can apply or be nominated at any time by their parents, teachers, counselors, and administration. You do not have to wait for semester breaks to submit your information.

For more information, contact Quest Academy at 281-261-9200 ext. 3151.
