Sugar Land preserves holiday Spirit with 10th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting

The City of Sugar Land’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5-8 p.m.

Just 10 years ago before City Hall was built and Town Square was the vibrant place that it is today, a 20 foot Christmas tree was lit to celebrate the holiday season. During the past decade, attendance figures for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting event grew from about 500 to almost 15,000, and the iconic tree now towers a statuesque 40 feet over the middle of the Town Square plaza.

The same elements that drew the first crowd to an undeveloped area are still part of the event today – Santa; the lighting of the tree; and most importantly, a sense of community.

And now as the event celebrates its 10-year anniversary, plans are underway to commemorate this milestone. Back by popular demand, Christ United Methodist Church will sponsor the life-size 15 foot snow globe where families will have the opportunity to take a one-of-a kind commemorative photo inside the giant inflatable.

Juggling elves, a “Letters to Santa” station and live ice sculpture artists are just a few of the walk-around festive performers that will entertain attendees.

Not to be outdone, Santa will once again make his grand appearance to light the tree and will also be onsite for free pictures with children of all ages at the Sugar Creek Baptist Church photo and activity stations.

Main stage entertainment will include performances by adult Sugar Land Super Star winner Lauryn Harris; junior Sugar Land Super Star winner Selena Packard; local school groups and organizations; and several community choirs. Back again this year is BalletForte with a stunning performance of its annual production, The Nutcracker.

The event is free and open to the public. A free shuttle service will run from Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd., to Sugar Land Town Square from 4:30-8:30 p.m. Parking will also be available in the Texas and Lone Star garages located in Town Square.
