Tires and rims a hot commodity

By LeaAnne Klentzman

Law enforcement agencies all across Fort Bend County are being plagued by the theft of tires and rims.

Imagine heading out the front door for work only to find not only one, but both of your vehicles in your driveway are sitting on blocks. Earlier this year that was a crime that was plaguing car dealerships. Now, it has become a problem throughout neighborhoods.

Over the last several months tire and rim thefts have been a problem in Sugar Creek in Sugar Land as far west as East Bernard and midway through the county in the city of Rosenberg.

Rosenberg Assistant police chief Dallis Warren said Tuesday that on Friday night November 9, 2012, Finnegan Chevrolet, located at 26529 US Highway 59 in Rosenberg discovered 16 vehicles were missing tires and rims; many left on wooden blocks. The investigation revealed that the west fence along the dealership had been cut.

Warren said, “Tire tracks from a dual wheel vehicle, possibly a box truck or rental truck, were seen along the driveway between the dealership and the adjacent business.” He identified the targeted vehicles as trucks and SUVs. Those are also the same vehicles targeted in Sugar Land and Rosenberg neighborhoods. One Rosenberg family walked out to go to work recently and both vehicles in the driveway were up on blocks; not a tire or rim in sight.

These thefts are not isolated incidents and police from all jurisdictions ask that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
