Winners named in Baines poster contest

These posters shown can be viewed at two locations.

Congratulations are in store for five Baines Middle School students who are winners in the “Imagine Peace” Poster Contest. Jack Fisher, a 7th grader, took 1st place. His artwork best embraced the theme. Two very different people are shaking hands with a banner of flags from many countries and a descending dove joining in the background. Madison Ward, an 8th grader, took 2nd place. Her expressive drawing of a lion and a lamb was the most artistic. 8th grader Sydney Bruckschen took 3rd place. Her detailed, pencil drawn hands in the shape of a heart with the world as the backdrop is very eye-catching. 7th grader, Logan Wren’s colorful and detailed animals & birds at the water was given an honorable mention as well as 8th grader, Luke Farrar’s black & white textured drawing of a peace sign on a stand also stood out as exceptional work.

Sponsored by the Sienna Lions Club, the Peace Contest Coordinator, Lion Beth Ibara tells us, “This is the 25th year that The Lions Club International has held a peace contest. The goal is to encourages young people, ages 11-13, to think about the importance of peace, creatively express what it means to them and to share their own unique visions with others.” While the contest offers a $25 gift certificate for 1st place, Jack Fisher is now eligible to win a $300 savings bond at the district level. The grand prize includes $5,000 in cash and a trip for the winner and two family members to attend the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners receive a certificate and $500 in cash. Previous winners can be viewed at www.lionsclub.org.

The Baines MS “imagine Peace” poster contest collection is currently on display at the Sienna Branch Library through November 30. The collection will then be moved to the Sienna HEB Café for further viewing through December 16.
