University Branch Library Book Club meets Dec. 10

The next meeting of the University Branch Library Book Club will take place on Monday, December 10, beginning at 1:30 pm, in the Large Conference Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. The book to be discussed is Mischa Berlinski’s debut novel, Fieldwork.

This multi-dimensional novel contains elements of the murder mystery, historical novel, psychological thriller, and even travelogue. The author writes about a fictionalized version of himself as a reporter taking a sabbatical in Thailand, where his girlfriend recently accepted a job. While there, Mischa learns about an American anthropologist who committed suicide in a Thai prison where she had been sentenced to serve 50 years for murdering a missionary.

As he delves into the mysterious circumstances of the anthropologist’s crime and death, Mischa uncovers an entire conflict that has been waging between the anthropologists and the American missionaries for influence over the native tribes of northern Thailand.

Anyone interested in meeting with other readers who share the same love for literature and lively discussion is invited to attend.  For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
