College knowledge at Stafford MSD is part of vision plan
By Karen Daniels
As part of Stafford’s strategic vision plan, Stafford High School has made a commitment to their college readiness program with the help of Senior Counselor, Pippa Day. Beginning in July, before school even began, Ms. Day sent letters to the incoming senior class to schedule appointments for the first three weeks in August to discuss students’ goals and knowledge on the navigation of college.
“The most important part of the college admissions process is the willingness to investigate,” she said. “The Internet is a senior’s best friend during this critical time. Students can find out college application deadlines, find sites like applytexas (dot) org that allow them to send one application to multiple universities, register for the SAT and ACT, and research thousands of available scholarships.” There are 204 seniors registered (not including life skills class) at Stafford. Ms. Day was able to meet with 191 of them. This year, Stafford MSD had more kids than ever take the SAT or ACT.
Several events have been planned for the 2012/2013 year to help students learn as much as they can. On October 11, 45 colleges and universities participated in the College Fair held at the Civic Center. Stafford’s administration received positive feedback from these institutions about students’ questions and their focused attention.
The next event, Parent Partnership, will be held on November 28 from 6:30 to 8:00pm to assist parents on FAFSA, scholarship information, and a presentation from the University of Houston.
Coming soon, a week-long community college fair will be held during lunch featuring one college for each day of the week. After that, a week-long technical school fair during lunch with the same format will be held. Additionally, a mobile computer lab will come to the school twice a week, both before school and during lunch so that students can have computer access and register for college entrance exams or apply for colleges and scholarships.
Any interested senior can sign up for field trips to Houston Community College. For more information on making the college dream a reality, go to www.ownyourownfuture.com/
