Long Elementary teacher is runner up for “Girls On The Run Coach of the Year”
Long Elementary 4th-grade teacher Kim Lybarger is the first runner-up for Girls on the Run (GOTR) International’s 2012 Coach of the Year.
Lybarger was chosen from an entry sent in by Stephanie Arriaga, a then 5th -grader at Long Elementary. Stephanie’s entry was just one of thousands sent to Girls on the Run International from more than 200 GOTR Councils.
“She (Lybarger) has taught me that I am beautiful just the way I am,” Arriaga wrote. “She is, too!”
Lybarger also taught Arriaga to “finish strong, to believe that I can reach the highest star in the universe and to have courage for myself.”
Lybarger will receive $250 and the Girls on the Run of Greater Houston Council will receive $250. Stephanie will receive a Fitness Pack from the national sponsor, Horizon.
Girls on the Run is in its second year at Long Elementary. Begun with a grant from the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation, GOTR has spread to several other elementary campuses in the District and one junior high school.
Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K event with healthy-living education. GOTR uses exercise, positive reinforcement and encouraging role models to help girls discover the confidence they need in those critical preteen years and beyond. Through interactive activities, such as running, playing games and discussing tough topics, girls learn how to celebrate being their own unique person.
