Meals on Wheels’ Secret Santa visits the elderly too

December 17, 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Santas will begin delivering close to 2,000 gifts to shut-in elderly who otherwise would be forgotten this holiday season

It does not matter how old you are, being forgotten on Christmas and the Holidays is enough to break anyone’s heart, especially the elderly who have had a life, married, raised children, held a job for 40-50 years, and served their community.
Yet, now, these elderly, mostly over 80+ years of age, are alone, shut-in, no longer drive, and their grandkids arrive for the holidays only in photographs from different states and continents. Yet, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels are making sure, these elderly will not be forgotten this holiday season.

On December 17, and the days following, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels will begin delivering close to 2,000 Christmas and Holiday gifts that have been collected from  the community, businesses, and different organizations.

The Secret Santa for Seniors was a tremendous success, and staff are trilled that all of the elderly on the Meals on Wheels program, in Fort Bend County will receive gifts. By Dec. 17, the oversized lobby of the headquarters in Rosenberg will be filled with gifts stacked half way to the ceiling, as volunteers throughout the county will play Santa and will begin delivering all of the gifts.

The whole process is a real site to see, first all the conference rooms are filled with volunteers wrapping gifts, then more volunteers come in to load their cars and begin knocking on the shut-ins’ doors.

“They say when children wake up Christmas morning their faces are beaming and glowing with joy at the gifts around the tree, but when you see an elderly’s face light up when they open their doors to receive gifts, their pure joy and delight of realizing they have not been forgotten, and their total appreciation is something that you just have to see to understand what it means to not be forgotten, especially when it seems like you have and are alone,” said Manuela H. Arroyos, CEO, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.
