Stafford Municipal School District high school senior urges Stafford residents to attend public hearing

Dear Editor,

Did you know that there is NO risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke that contains over 7,000 chemicals of which hundreds are toxic? (Surgeon General’s Report 2010)   And did you know that food service workers are 50% more likely to die from lung cancer than the general public? (Surgeon General’s Report 2004) And that smoking costs Texas  health care over $5.83 billion every year? (Tobacco Free Kids Campaign, March 2012)  Did you know that you can help reduce the dangers of secondhand smoke inside public places in Stafford?

Here’s how:  attend the public hearing at Stafford City Hall, 2610 S. Main St. on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.  City council members need to hear from Stafford residents especially.  So this is your chance to make a difference in the health of your family and friends.  People’s jobs should not give them heart disease, emphysema, cancer and many other health problems that are caused by secondhand smoke.  Everyone’s health matters whether you work in a restaurant or a bar.  How can a business suffer that cares about the lives of their customers and employees?

As a high school senior who has attended Stafford schools for nearly 10 years, this is very simple to me.  We expect businesses to provide safe food, pure water, and a safe environment.  Safe indoor air is expected as well.

Hope to see you at the council meeting on Dec. 12.  Together we can help make Stafford a healthier place to live and do business.

Everyone deserves to breathe safe air.

M. Shelton
