It’s voluntary, stupid!

Dear Editor,

The front page article on red light camera violations in the Wednesday, December 5, 2012 edition contains a disturbing and misleading false assertion by the City of Sugar Land spokesperson Mr. Doug Adolph. Mr. Adolph says “The city of Sugar Land works with a collection agency for the collection of past due violations.” This measure is neither permitted by the state nor has it been adopted by the City of Sugar Land.

This kind of assertion is not just misleading the citizens but raises some seriously troubling questions such as is it “simply business as usual” or is it “extortion?” Whatever the answer may be, Mr. Adolph is sullying the award winning reputation of our city. It is clear that red light camera fines are virtually voluntary.

It is my humble desire that the city stop this practice of covering-up this important fact. And, because the ongoing petition drive is very likely to be successful in banning this unfair method of enforcement just as was done in Houston, I call for the immediate preemptive removal these cameras from our city limits.
