MCPD Chief Joel Fitzgerald addresses WCMC Holiday Luncheon
Missouri City Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald was the guest speaker at the WCMC Annual Holiday Luncheon, held this year at the historic Dew House.
The ladies of the club presented the Chief with a sleigh full of toys for underprivileged children, as well as presented Ursula Chester of Home Instead Senior Care with lap blankets to benefit the Santa for Senior’s Program.
In his address to the ladies, Fitzgerald spoke about the “I Choose to Follow the Rules Program,” where police officers go into classrooms of third through sixth graders to make them aware of the dangers of drugs, gangs, violence and bullying. Those students who choose to follow the rules and take the pledge of “No Gangs, No Drugs, No Violence, No way,” are rewarded at year’s end with a t-shirt and a day of fun, sponsored by the police as well as corporate underwriters, at places such as Fun-Tiki or the Skeeters Ballpark.
Interacting with the police in this way breaks down barriers and makes the officers in uniform more approachable on multiple levels. Additionally, this positive reinforcement of following rules reaps long term benefits not only to the students yet to the community in general.
