Road rage leads to a woman’s death

By LeaAnne Klentzman

Early Thursday morning about 12:30 a.m., the 911 lines at the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office lit up like a Christmas tree after Mission Bend residents heard gunfire in their streets.

Sheriff’s spokesman, Bob Haenel, said deputies responded to “shots fired” calls from residents near the 7300 block of Addicks Clodine Road in Mission Bend, a far northeast Fort Bend County subdivision. As deputies arrived on the scene they discovered shell casings scattered all over the roadway near the intersection of Camino Del Sol said Haenel.

Some officers secured the scene while others canvased the area talking to residents. While deputies were sorting out what had unfolded on Addicks Clodine, they were notified by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office that the body of a shooting victim was just blocks away, across the county line, in their jurisdiction.

As officers from both agencies combed their respective crime scenes they learned that a couple driving a Lexus had gotten into a traffic altercation with two other cars. “Investigators determined that the victim’s husband became involved in a traffic altercation with people in two other vehicles,” said a Harris County Sheriff’s spokesperson. That altercation escalated when the Lexus that Veronica Soto and her husband were traveling in was “boxed” in by the other two vehicles. When that rolling road rage fit came to a stop on Addicks Clodine, the driver of one of the “boxing cars” got out, ran into his home and retrieved a military style rife and began shooting at the Soto’s. Reportedly, Soto’s husband returned fire.

During the melee, Veronica Soto, 30, was hit in the head as her husband drove away from the shooting scene. According to Harris County authorities, the Soto’s vehicle was hit several times in the rear as it sped away; Veronica Soto, was sitting in the front passenger seat. She succumbed to her wounds shortly thereafter and collapsed in the driveway of her sister’s home just blocks from the shooting scene.

At press time Soto is the only known victim of the incident.

Mark Trevino, 20, of Fort Bend County has been identified as the shooter and according to authorities, has confessed. Trevino has been charged with murder and is in custody.
