Stafford MSD Graphic Art Design Program performing on a professional level

By Karen Daniels

After congratulations were given to the Stafford Girls Volleyball team for becoming Bi-State Championships and District 24-3A Runner’s Up, the Board of Trustees were presented with a graphic design presentation by instructor Mrs. Tammie Myers at the December meeting.

In it’s third year at Stafford High School, the Graphic Design program offers Graphic Arts I, II, III and Desktop Publishing I, II, and III, teaching about the different careers available. Students in the desktop publishing courses design and create the school yearbook, event tickets, flyers, t-shirt designs, banquet and award programs, invitations, newsletters, and brochures.

Last year the design program offered quality design services to Fort Bend County community nonprofits at no cost. One of the non-profit organizations – The Pregnancy Resource Medical Center of Fort Bend County – chose SHS Senior, Adrian Martin’s logo from the 16 submitted to represent their center. He was on hand at the meeting to demonstrate the process used to design the 2013 calendar presented to the Board.

Students in the Design program have also designed posters for tobacco education and driving safety; logos for the SMSD Education Foundation; and submitted designs for the Stafford College and Career Center currently under construction.

During the citizen participation segment, available to parents and community members at every meeting, Olga Preses informed Superintendant Lance Hindt and the Board of her concern that four minutes between classes at the high school is not enough time for the students to make it to class and to use the facilities.

Ms. Preses further explained that one of her children asked for a hall pass, having gone to the classroom first to avoid a tardy, and was denied. It was explained to her by the teacher that is was district policy. Dr. Hindt promised to contact Ms. Preses to help address this issue.

Don’t forget the 4th Annual Stafford Golf Tournament, Monday, March 11, 2013, at Sugar Creek County Club sponsored by the SMSD Education Foundation. This event provides student scholarships and teacher grants.
