Creative Constructors Lego Club formed at Palmer Elementary

Palmer Elementary School students have a good reason to stay after school these days. Nearly 200 of the students have become members of their school’s new Creative Constructors Lego Club, a parent-teacher cooperative created to help students improve their problem-solving and analytical skills.

The club welcomes students in grades K-5, who meet on the first Wednesday of each month. At the start of each meeting, members are grouped by grade level and presented with challenges that involve building designs with Legos. The club sponsors also host guided building sessions led by engineering and industry experts, who share details about their professions and introduce the Lego challenge.

Carrie Mustachia, Team Lead Kindergarten teacher, initiated the club when her son, Weston, suggested the idea after seeing a Lego competition in the City of Sugar Land’s Town Center. She secured funding for supplies through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and DonorsChoose.org.  Additional donations of Legos were provided by The Pop Culture Company in Houston.

“The plan is to nourish the intellectual abilities and analytical skills of students through the use of Lego manipulation,” said Mustachia. “Students solve problems and adapt their ideas to meet each challenge. We also plan to involve students in local Lego building competitions.”

To join the Creative Constructors Lego Club, Palmer students must have a completed permission form, display model behavior during the meetings, and adhere to the club schedule. For more information about the club, contact Carrie Mustachia at carrie.mustachia@fortbendisd.com.
