Local Girl Scout earns Gold Award

Ambassador Girl Scout Carolyn Ramirez of New Territory Rainbow Stars Service Unit-Troop 138 completed her Girl Scout Gold Award – the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, symbolizing outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service and advocacy. The Girl Scout Gold Award involves more than a year of work, including a minimum of 80 hours of planning and leading a project that benefits the community and will have a long-term impact on the girl’s community.

The goal of Ramirez’s project was to create a sustainable program to benefit the environment at her school. Stephen F. Austin High School in Fort Bend ISD had a lack of environmental fervor, according to carolyn.  She contacted Keep Sugar Land Beautiful and Executive Director Vicki Gist, who helped the ball start rolling. Over many months and after hundreds of phone calls, she was able to secure free weekly recycling pick-up from Waste Corporation of America.

Now her goal is to continue to educate the students at Austin High School about recycling.  Currently, Austin High School recycles an average of 180 gallons of plastic and aluminum every week. The program is now a permanent part of the high school. Ms. Ramirez said, “The Girl Scout Gold Award has taught me to effectively network and make contacts.  I gained leadership skills by pioneering the recycling movement at my school.”

Carolyn is a senior at Austin High School and is the daughter of Julie and Carlos Ramirez. She plans to attend either the University of Texas or Rice University in the fall and wants to study chemical engineering, continuing her efforts to find ways to protect our environment and natural resources.
