Mission West Students get a jumpstart on Career Planning

Shown speaking to students is Corporal Matt Powell of the Texas Army National Guard.

Youngsters at Mission West Elementary School (MWE) have gotten a jumpstart on career planning by taking part in their school’s annual Career Day. The event welcomed professionals from various industries, who spoke to students about the education and training needed to pursue their chosen career paths.

This year, more than 20 professionals visited with MWE students in grades 2-5, during 20-minute sessions. The speakers represented law enforcement, engineering, U.S. military, banking, real estate, nutrition and other fields. They shared their educational and professional backgrounds, offered advice, and encouraged students to work hard and do well in school.

Dr. Teresa Cody, a Sugar Land dentist, reminded students that they can decide what they will become in life. “Write down your goals and work hard, and you will be surprised what you accomplish,” she said.

The Career Day event was coordinated by counselor Karen Powell and Maria Lopez, nurse/counselor aide.
