Sartaria Middle School hosted first LEGO League robotic tournament

These Sartratia MS students are busy working on their LEGO League robotic project, while learning at the same time.

The SMS Science and Robotics Club hosted their first annual middle school FLL qualifier on Saturday, Dec. 8. An international robotics program in partnership with LEGO, the FLL is part of the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, organization, an international nonprofit agency with the mission of inspiring the future workforce to appreciate the excitement and personal rewards of a career in science and technology.

Six teams of middle school students from around the area, as well as coaches and parents, attended the event at Sartartia Middle School in Sugar Land. “FIRST Lego League provides a unique opportunity for young people to have fun while learning,” said Mr. Ian Macintyre, one of the sponsors of the SMS Science and Robotics Club.

“It inspires those involved and lets them experience teamwork in accomplishing a technological objective,” Macintyre said. “We want children to experience science, technology, engineering and mathematics from a hands-on perspective, and hopefully create future engineers and scientists.”

Students assembled robots with LEGO technology and used them to compete to accomplish tasks involved in a real-world scenario. The event also challenged students in four areas: robot design, research, team work and the table competition. Teams won prizes in all four areas, and Epic Team 3.0 was the grand champion of the event.

The event was sponsored by Statoil for the second year as sponsor of FIRST LEGO League in the South Texas-Houston region and the SMS Science and Robotics Club. If you are interested in science, SMS Science and Robotics club is sponsoring another event – The World of Science – a free science night with many hands-on activities that will show students how fun science can be. The event is Friday, January 18, at SMS from 6-8 pm. The event is free but donations will be accepted.
