Sugar Land Girl Scout promotes self-esteem to earn Gold Award

Girl Scout Reilly Smith held a cheer clinic for young girls to help build their confidence and self-esteem to earn Girl Scouts of the USA’s Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts achieve this national recognition.

“This project game me a stronger sense of self because I am now aware of the impact I can make on my community,” said Reilly, a junior at St. Agnes Academy. “Working with young girls made me realize the importance of having positive role models for girls to look up to.”

“I chose this project because I feel younger girls need to be empowered with positive self-esteem and confidence so they can believe in themselves and be given the opportunity to succeed at any age,” said Reilly. “I also feel it is important for girls to engage in exercise on a daily basis, develop healthy eating habits and good hygiene skills.”

For her project, Reilly led her team of volunteers in planning and hosting a cheer clinic where girls learned cheers, routines, stretching exercises and focused on the physical benefits of dance. Reilly and her volunteers also took time to teach their attendees about healthy eating habits and the importance of personal hygiene. Approximately 40 girls attended the clinic.

Reilly has been a member of Girl Scouts for 11 years and has also earned the Silver Award. At St. Agnes Academy she is a member of tennis, band, Latin Club and National Honor Society. She is also a Stake Jesuit cheerleader. Following graduation she plants to attend college to study science and math.
