Free Saturday movie-matinee offered February 9

Fort Bend County Libraries will feature a free Saturday Movie Matinee at Sugar Land Branch Library, on Saturday, February 9, beginning at 12:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 550 Eldridge.

The special feature this month is set in the ante-bellum South. Sarny is a 12-year-old slave girl who faces a relatively hopeless life until a former runaway slave named Nightjohn comes to the plantation. Nightjohn secretly begins teaching Sarny to read and write — a crime punishable by death. When the plantation owner, Clel Waller, discovers that someone amongst his slaves can read and write, Nightjohn takes the blame and loses his hand as punishment. Sarny confesses to writing a pass for another slave to flee to freedom, and Waller’s wife demands that she be sold. Sarny soon learns how valuable her ability to read and write can be. This movie is rated PG-13.

The movie is free and open to the public. For more information about the featured movie, call the branch library at 281-238-2140 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
