So when’s Costco going to open?

By Elsa Maxey

Sugar Land’s reported developing plans for this year alongside U.S. 59 and University Boulevard has spurred considerable community interest and excitement. The “Star’s” feedback, in particular, relates to inquiries about Costco. “Costco plans to open its retail club at the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard next summer or fall,” said Sugar Land’s city spokesperson Doug Adolph. “More than $10 million in new capital will be invested,” and there will be 150 jobs created, he also said.

The commercial area where Costco will be located is approximately 84 acres, according to the city. “There are a number of for sale signs around the general area where the Costco site will be located,” responded Adolph, settling questions about the for sale signs on property in that location. He also reports that Costco has already purchased about 16 acres for development from Newland.

Fluor Daniel, on the other hand, “is in the process of purchasing 50 acres at the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard,” said Adolph. This is part of developing a long-term plan to remain in the city. The land for the Fluor project is located in the Telfair commercial development, which is not far from its current facilities in Sugar Land.

This past summer, the Sugar Land City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Fluor Enterprises, Inc. about incentives it offered before its land purchase agreement would be made at the acreage at U.S. 59 and University Boulevard. The reported terms of the Memorandum of Understanding with the city require the company to make a significant capital investment and maintain a workforce of at least 2,000 jobs at the facility.

Worldwide, Fluor, which is headquartered in Irving, Texas, employs more than 45,000 employees worldwide and has offices in over 25 countries.
