Fill’r up! Hundreds of gallons of fuel stolen
By LeaAnne Klentzman
The Smithers Lake Road area off FM 762 was a hot bed of gas thievery in early January. Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said on Friday, January 4, 2013, Sheriff’s deputies were called to two different locations in that area to investigate the theft of fuel.
At one property the suspects entered through a gate and drained some 600 gallons of diesel fuel from a storage tank, stole the hand pump, and burglarized a nearby storage building by taking a generator and chainsaw.
According to the victim, the theft had to have occurred between the hours of 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, and 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, said Haenel.
In the second similar incident, the victim told deputies that he lost some 100 gallons of diesel as well as his fuel pump. “The victim said the theft occurred between noon on Jan. 3 and 1 p.m. on Jan. 4. The fuel pump has the victim’s name in white paint on it,” said Haenel.
“In both cases, two sets of tracks were found, indicating the thieves had a trailer,” said Haenel.
Information which leads to the apprehension and filing of charges on the suspects involved could earn a reward of up to $5,000.
