OMG: Inside Fort Bend!

Anyone seen someone lifting a storm drain cover and taking off with it?  The city of Sugar Land is missing close to 20 of them and this is costing taxpayers between $68 to $114 to replace each of them.

City trucks were spotted making their rounds to replace the heavy drain covers in some of the neighborhoods. About a dozen of the steel grates weighing between 100 to 150 pounds were noticed to be missing right after Christmas on Gillingham from Jess Pirtle to West Airport.

City spokesperson Doug Adolph confirmed the missing strom drain covers and told the “Star” that also between Dec. 26 and Jan. 15, there were an additional two stolen, one from the park on Venice and the other from Lakeview at Neal. Four more drain covers were later reported to be missing on Jan. 22, two in the area of Sandpiper Drive and Horseshoe Drive and two in the area of Goldfinch and Heron Way.

Adolph said the thefts are under investigation and it’s been surmised that the steel grates may be getting sold as scrap metal. If anyone sees this kind of suspicious activity, you are advised to immediately contact the police.  Missing grates grating on anyone?  You bet cha!  The storm drains are placed to provide access to the sewer system and the steel covers prevent large objects from entering the system.
