The World of Science, January 18, provided an evening of hands-on science activities for the over 300 people who attended the event. Students and parents worked together to enjoy inquiry-based science activities.

This free event, sponsored by SMS Science and Robotics Club in conjunction with Kalpana Vaidya’s Take Action Project for her Girl Scout Gold Award and the Girls’ World Forum, hoped to introduce families to science and how much fun science can be.

The World of Science featured over 15 hands-on activities focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Some of the activities were making and flying a paper airplane, making a robot, learning about fingerprinting, playing with a baby alligator, polishing a rock, making a tornado, extracting DNA from a strawberry, and seeing Jupiter and the Moon up close and personal. Activities are designed to engage children (ages K – 8th grade) and their families in science exploration.  There were also several demonstrations on such topics as Chemistry (HMNS), Sound Waves (AHS Science Club), and Rocks and Geology (ExxonMobil). “Science is such an important subject. I felt the need to get families involved.  I hope this event will start conversations about scientific concepts at home,” said Kalpana Vaidya, organizer of this event.

The World of Science was unforgettable night filled with scientific investigations. Mr. Mike McKie, the acting superintendent of FBISD, said, “I truly enjoyed viewing all of the exhibits. The quality of work FBISD students like Kalpana Vaidya produce continues to amaze me!” Go to wofscience.weebly.com for information about the event and other interesting science activities you can do at home.
