Missouri City Chapter of the Links receives $20,000 for STEM education

Missouri City Chapter of the Links, Incorporated is pleased to announce that it has been selected for a $20,000 sub-grant from the Links Foundation, Incorporated in support of STEM education. The Funds, designated to help eliminate the STEM academic achievement gap for students of color, are made possible by the $250,000 grant award The Links Foundation, Incorporated received from Chevron.

The grant provides vital funding to enhance one of the key programs of The Links, Incorporated, “STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain.” With a focus on students from 6th to 12th grades, the program aims to enhance the current curriculum, emphasizing STEM disciplines, engineering and energy industry career readiness. The Links, Incorporated expects to reach approximately 1,200 students across the country with this academic enrichment.

A key enhancement of the program is the incorporation of the NASA STEM Application Content. The content includes educational and professional development, as well as teacher training tools.

“The number for students of color in STEM related careers is significantly low due to a lack of access to sufficient STEM education, “ said Eddie Bernice Johnson, chair of the National STEM Career Readiness Initiative for The Links Incorporated.  “Our STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain program helps to fill that void by providing students with opportunities to be exposed to and readied for STEM – related careers.”

“We look forward to using this grant in our relationship with students from E-STEM Academy. We will continue to broaden their exposure to NASA, the Port of Houston, Aviation careers, the energy sector, as well as traditional math and science based professions, “said Missouri City Links President Sharon Michael Owens.
