Fort Bend ISD Trustees interviewing superintendent candidates

Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees had three back-to-back closed executive sessions this week in order to interview candidates interested in becoming the district’s new superintendent.

Fort Bend ISD hopes to announce a finalist or finalists by the start of the spring semester with the hope of making the appointment after the requisite 21-day waiting period, for a start date of July 1.

A group of candidates identified by search firm Hazard, Young & Attea were brought in for a first round of interviews after the trustees held a workshop on February 6 to work on interviewing techniques.

The process to narrow the list of preferred qualifications in a new superintendent involved input from a variety of stakeholders including teachers, parents, community leaders and students.

Nearly 1,500 people participated in the online survey, focus group or community meeting on the qualifications needed in a new superintendent.

Their input helped the BOT and the search firm compiled a list of characteristics that would be ideal in the district’s next leader. The list includes being an exceptional communicator, fostering respect, pride and fairness throughout the district and a visionary leader who can meet the challenges of the district and build on its strengths.

Since August 2012, the district has been led by Acting Superintendent Mike McKie after former Fort Bend ISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy Jenney retired.

At the January 22 meeting of the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees, the Board amended McKie’s contract to change his title to “Interim Superintendent” from “Acting Superintendent.” This change was made because Jenney, officially retired from the district January 31, 2013.

McKie will serve as Interim Superintendent pending the Board’s completion of its search for a new superintendent.
