Signing day held at Stafford High School
By Karen Daniels
These are exciting times at Stafford MSD. Three students, Charles Anumnu, Carlton Anumnu, and Easy Anayma, have signed with the University of Texas in Austin to pursue their education and be part of the Longhorn Track and Field team. All three young men have attended Stafford MSD since kindergarten. Last year, these students were on the relay team that competed in five events at the state track meet. The relay team, along with teammate Tristan Barnett, set a new high school record and won the state championship in the 4x100m relay.
Carlton and Charles Anumnu are twins. They were accepted to the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT, which is no easy task. For all four years of high school they studied at the Stafford Engineering Academy Lab (SEAL) program. The Academy’s emphasis is to prepare students to enter the field of engineering at the college level. Easy Anayma plans to pursue a degree in the medical field. Individually, he finished fourth in the 110m high hurdles. Charles Anumnu finished third in the 200m dash and twin brother Carlton finished second in the 100m dash. The Houston Chronicle named Carlton Anumnu the Track and Field Athlete of the Year of 2012.
All together, the 2012 Stafford High School track team earned 8 gold medals. The only other Stafford athlete to earn a gold medal was Sergio Hinojosa in 1991. The student athletes at Stafford call him Coach Hinojosa. Along with him, Coach Ryan Beard and Coach Miyoshi Oliver, are responsible for training the team to victory.
