Second Mile Mission Center relocates to Missouri City facility
Second Mile Mission Center has moved into a new Missouri City facility at 1135 Highway 90A. The 15,000 square foot facility includes a larger waiting area and food pantry among other enhancements.
“This is an incredible time for Second Mile as we open this new facility and continue to meet critical needs of our neighbors. At the same time, we are expanding our programs that go directly into the neediest neighborhoods to get to know and help our neighbors in need,” said Executive Director Sarah White.
Second Mile has served Fort Bend County 23 years providing food, clothing, health care and other basic needs for individuals in crisis. The new location is only two miles away from the previous one and borders Tang City Drive, just north of Texas Parkway. The building was designed with the goal of giving individuals-in-need a comfortable experience and having room to grow as needed.
“The Murphy Road location served Second Mile and the community very well,” said Board Chairman Jamey Webster. “As the years passed by, it was time to make serious renovations or look at options for a new facility. We looked at what Second Mile could afford to pay, and with a great deal of research and prayer, we were able to lease a new facility built from the ground up with our needs in mind.”
After a groundbreaking in April, crews have been working to prepare the facility. Volunteers stepped in to install cabinetry and desks, apply finishes to flooring, clean the windows and help move truckloads of equipment and materials to the new location.
A ribbon-cutting is planned for Feb. 19, and an open house on Thursday, March 21.
As the newly named Pat McWaters Health Clinic at Second Mile opens in the Missouri City facility, healthcare volunteers are especially needed. The volunteer-run clinic seeks to add services on evenings and Saturday mornings. Call (281) 261-9199 to volunteer.
