Family time cut short by stray bullet

A couple of youngsters and their grandfather were out for a walk in rural northwest Fort Bend County when one of the boys suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. The incident unfolded on Saturday, February 23, about 4:15p.m.
According to Sheriff Troy Nehls’ spokesman Bob Haenel, “The grandfather and his two grandsons were walking in the 3900 block of Nails Road, which is located between Weston Lakes and Simonton. The grandfather told deputies they heard a pop sound and then he observed his 9-year-old grandson grab his right leg in pain.” Further investigation by the grandfather revealed the boy had been hit by a gunshot.
Haenel said the grandfather thought the boy had twisted his leg, but upon inspection, discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The child was taken to an emergency care clinic on Texas 99/Grand Parkway where he was then taken by Fort Bend ambulance to Texas Children’s Hospital where he underwent surgery.
The child is expected to recover, said Haenel.
The case remains under investigation.
