New store coming to Sugar Creek Village Shopping Center

A new upscale Fiesta Market will open this year in Sugar Land, where the former Gerland’s grocery store previously operated at that location for the past 20 years before it closed last May. The City of Sugar Land issued a permit last fall for remodeling and updating the existing structure, both inside and out.

At what is known as the Sugar Creek Village Shopping Center in Sugar Land, there will soon be a Fiesta Market Place doing business there. Residents have noticed the considerable construction underway in front of the building at the 13800 block of U.S. 59, the main entrance to the Sugar Creek subdivision. One of them said “It seems like years since those of us who live in the area could take a short drive to Gerland’s for groceries and we certainly welcome Fiesta.”

Back in April of last year, many probably recall the special deals offered at the Grand Market upscale grocery store as it prepared for final closure the following month. Gerland’s had been operating at that location for more than 20 years.

What is visibly underway now at the grocery store site and confirmed by a city source is an entire makeover of the building from the inside out, “and they are close to having the building finalized.” A permit with the city was filed back in October 2012, according to city spokesman Doug Adolph, and it was to remodel and renovate the 40,324 square foot structure in need of the updates.

Nothing was further available from Adolph, who said there is no specific timeline for completion of the Fiesta Mart in the city. The new grocery store development will in all likelihood bring additional jobs to the area and the store will probably open this year.

Other sources indicate that the store’s retail space at the Sugar Creek Village Shopping Center has been leased.
