Stafford MSD school construction could come down to the wire

By Karen Daniels

There is some concern among Stafford MSD top administrators that the construction timeline for the school campuses will come down to the wire with the start of the Fall 2013/2014 school year. The $49.9 million dollar bond that was approved in May of 2011 is nearing completion. As of the February 2012 board meeting, there were 168 days left for the bond deadline with 58% of the job completed. Much of the work and renovations left will be finished over the summer, once the students are out of school.

The unpredictability of what lies behind some of the walls is the concern. Anyone who’s renovated their home knows about the surprises that can be found along the way. The condition of the plumbing and electricity won’t truly be realized until the first days of summer break.

There’s reason to be optimistic. All of the renovations being done at this point will be indoors. Excluding extreme summer storms such as a hurricane, rain won’t slow the pace of the construction. Interior work crews will run on a 24/7 shift. Should there be some delay, a contingency plan is being formed. The Civic Center has been reserved for the first week of school. Orientation will be held here, and if needed, some classes.

So far, though, every deadline Stafford MSD has set, they’ve met. Board President, Ettienne Zak commended the work on the project so far, advising not to rush. “Make sure the job is done right. Don’t sacrifice quality.”
