Willowridge art students create Black History Month paintings

WHS sophomores Chelsea Thrash and Andrew Jones stand beside a painting they created with their classmates Jordan Hadnot and Isaac Rodriguez, of Ray Charles.

In observance of Black History Month, art students at Willowridge High School have created and displayed artwork depicting African American icons such as President Barack Obama, Civil Rights Activist Rosa Parks, musician Ray Charles, and Jimi Hendrix, musician, singer and songwriter. Using butcher paper and black India ink, the students used the ‘fingerprinting” technique to duplicate pictures of the icons they chose. On average, each project took two weeks of class time to complete.

“This was a new technique for the students, and they loved it,” said Rachel Adams, Art I teacher. “I like to keep things interesting for them, and so far this year, we’ve worked with ink, paint, and markers. The students also completed a project using foil and shoe polish to create an antique finish on a modern picture.”

The fingerprint paintings will remain on display at the campus throughout the month of February.
