University Branch Library presents artist demonstration of clay handbuilding

Fort Bend County Libraries, in conjunction with Sugar Land Area Artists, will present a special artist demonstration of clay handbuilding at the University Branch Library on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 11:00 am, in the Small Meeting Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus.

Sculptor Ruth Wilson will share her experience as a handbuilding artist, creating whimsical fantasy characters from clay. Learn about the tools and materials needed for this art form, and watch as Wilson pinches, molds, and transforms a piece of clay into fantastical creations. Wilson will also talk about the sources of inspiration for her character creations, and will share photos from her studio in Brenham of the many characters she has created over the years.

Wilson received her master’s degree in Art Education from Northern Arizona University in 1974, and taught intermediate and high school art classes for many years before she retired from teaching in 1995. She began focusing on clay handbuilding after attending a ceramics class at North Harris County Community College in 1997. Since then, she has created a series of characters, each with individual characteristics, foibles, and attitudes.

An award-winning artist, Wilson has competed in numerous Texas Ceramic Competitions, and is a popular guest artist on the subject of sculptural handbuilding.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100, or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
