5th St. residents to receive surveys for input on plan

By Elsa Maxey

“No man’s land”  was once said about those living on 5th Street, but they’re actually in Fort Bend County, but in neither part of Missouri City nor Stafford, although some of them in the past had mistakenly claimed they lived within the city limits of one of those communities. The area is considered to be semi-rural and it is unincorporated.

Precinct 2 Fort Bend County Commissioner Grady Prestage recently announced that through the month of March, surveys in English and Spanish will take place on 5th street. A local task force is spearheading an effort to obtain information for a plan. It will be about encouraging small business development, improving access to affordable housing, preserving the community’s heritage, and promoting its unique character. The project in a partnership with the UT Center for Sustainable Development is funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Residents will be asked about improving their quality of life where they live. Commissioner Prestage’s office reports that the effort focuses on creating a vision for the community’s future. “Get involved, you could make a difference,” it advises.

The commissioner’s office also states that Fifth Street was once home to self-reliant former slaves, Imperial Sugar Refinery workers, business owners, musicians, activists, and sharecroppers.
