Ryan Brophy, 2013 winner of the Houston Branch event of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, with judges Rebecca Udden and Kate Pogue.

Clements High School (CHS) theatre student Ryan Brophy won first place in the English-Speaking Union’s regional Shakespeare Competition held recently at Main Street Theatre in Houston.  Brophy will represent the Houston area as a semi-finalist at the National Shakespeare Competition, which will be held on April 22 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Brophy impressed the judges and captivated the audience with his performance from Macbeth and his recitation of Sonnet #130.  Brophy is the student of Paul Shaffer, CHS Theatre Director.

Brophy’s all-expenses paid trip to New York City will include an acting workshop at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, tours of the city, and participation in the final stage of the competition. The first-place winner of the final competition will receive a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art’s Young Actors Summer School in London.

The English-Speaking Union’s (E-SU) program began in 1983 and has given more than 250,000 young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to discover and communicate their understanding of Shakespeare’s language.
