Stafford MSD wins 4th consecutive budget award

The Meritorious Budget Awards Program promotes and recognizes excellence in school budget presentation and enhances the school business officials’ skills in developing, analyzing and presenting a school system budget. For their 4th consecutive year, Stafford MSD has earned this honor for their 2012-2013 budget. In order to be considered, schools must provide clear budget presentation guidelines, define up to date budget practices, identify short and long term budget goals, promote fiscal management, and facilitate growth and development for their budget staff.
“As the only municipal school district in the state, the school district budget is developed, analyzed and approved by the SMSD Board of Trustees and the City of Stafford City Council,” said Superintendent Dr. Land Hindt. “The school board trustees and council members meet regularly with me and Chief Financial Officer, Mrs. Carla Merka, to create a budget that provides our students with the best educational experience possible while also being fiscally responsible to our taxpayers.”
CFO Carla Merka said, “I am proud of the continued efforts of the SMSD Business Department to earn this achievement. Even though our resources are limited due to the current financial hardships imposed on public schools, the SMSD business staff members are committed to producing an outstanding budget document that provides transparency to our stakeholders.”
The award was created by the Association of School Business Officials International, founded in 1910. ASBO is a professional association that provides programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business management practices, professional growth, and the effective use of educational resources.
