Regional DWI Task Force continues

Sugar Land police are participating in the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Regional DWI Task Force this month. Officers will be targeting drunk drivers this weekend and again March 15-16.

The initiative provides overtime funds for enhanced DWI enforcement during holiday weekends like Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day when there has traditionally been more alcohol-related traffic incidents.

Funding for the program is provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) through a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant. This STEP grant, which is administered through H-GAC, funds two additional SLPD officers each night looking specifically for drunk drivers.

Convicted first-time DWI offenders face penalties that include fines up to $2,000, six months in jail and loss of driver’s licenses for up to a year.

“Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is not worth the risk,” said Sgt. Wayne Coleman, of SLPD’s traffic division.  “You are putting your life and the lives of others on the line.”
