“Preserving the Bounty”

“Gardens overflowing with shiny, red tomatoes and bright green pepper…orchards filled with sweet, juicy peaches…farmers’ markets piled high with fresh produce…seafood markets brimming with today’s fresh catch…it is so easy to preserve.

Texas AgriLife Extension Service Family and Consumer Sciences in Fort Bend County will host “Preserving the Bounty”, a workshop event on Friday, April 12 at the Extension office Annex located at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg.  Canning techniques will include water bath and pressure cooker canning.  Products to be canned include salsa (the number one condiment in the U.S.), bread and butter pickles, jalapeno jelly and green beans.  Each participant will be able to take home one jar of each product.

The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m.  The cost of the workshop will be $50 and will include the four products, canning information for them and lunch.  Home food preservation may not save you money – but, you will know what goes in the jar.  Learn how to can fresh produce safely.  The preferred canning guide is So Easy to Preserve by Cooperative Extension The University of Georgia.  This guide will be available for an additional purchase of $15.00.  Seating for this event is limited.  Instructors for the class will be Sandra Fry, Fort Bend County FCS Agent and Dianne Gertson, FCS Agent Wharton County.
