Turn out lights for Earth Hour set for March 23

Sugar Land will participate in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 23, at 8:30 p.m. by turning off non-essential lights at City Hall.  Residents and businesses are asked to join the City in its commitment to a sustainable community.

Since 2007 when 2.2 million people took part in the first Earth Hour in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour has expanded to more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories with hundreds of millions of participants across seven continents.

Individuals all over the world are turning their passion for the planet into action with challenges that inspire their friends, families, colleagues and communities to do their part for the environment and go beyond the hour.

Last year’s “I Will, If You Will” Earth Hour campaign was adopted by hundreds of thousands of people from all corners of the globe who turned their symbolic lights off action into an ongoing commitment to a sustainable planet.

Nearly 35,000 Girls Scouts across the United States took part in Earth Hour last year through the Save Energy Project.  They installed 132,141 energy-efficient light bulbs across the country. The impact is a staggering 75,392,654 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions eliminated, equivalent to the CO2 sequestration from planting 7,286 acres of trees per year

In 2013, Earth Hour is more than just an annual event; it is a continuous movement driving real actions to change the world.
