April 29 – May 7 set for early voting

By Elsa Maxey

The arrangements are in place and the voting schedules have been set for local votes to be cast. Fort Bend County Commissioners Court took action last week on Joint Election Agreements for the upcoming May 11 Joint Election. The agreements are between the Fort Bend County Office of Election Administration and about a dozen political subdivisions including three school districts in the county, Fort Bend ISD, Lamar CISD and Stafford MSD.

Arcola, Meadows Place, Missouri City, Richmond, and Rosenberg are also holding elections. Among other districts on some of the ballots will be Fort Bend County MUD #2, Fort Bend County ESD #4 and Fort Bend County WCID # 10.

The City of Sugar Land recently called off its city council election reportedly saving it more than $37,500. The cancellation was due to there being no one else filing to run against four single-member district candidates declared to be the winners last month. Three of them, Bridget R. Yeung, Amy L. Mitchell and Harish C. Jajoo, are the incumbents of Districts 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Newly elected to serve in District 1, Stephen R. Porter will replace Don Smithers, who did not seek reelection.

Last week, Fort Bend County Commissioners also gave notice of polling places and times for voters to consider either confirming or denying the creation of the Fort Bend County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 6. “This is an election to create a new ESD in most of the area in Precinct 1 outside of the cities of Richmond & Rosenberg,” the county’s Elections Administrator John Oldham told the “Star”. Oldham said residents in the proposed area petitioned commissioners court to create the district. “The primary purpose of the district is to provide fire protection services,” he said.

Oldham also furnished early voting dates, which run between April 29 – May 7, for the joint election with varying times during this period.

Early voting with shorter lines and with what some consider to be more convenient hours is open to all registered voters. No excuse is needed to vote early.
