Anti-red light camera rally with petition for Sugar Land

Red light cameras…some of us don’t like them and some of us don’t mind them.  After all, they bring in revenue for the city furnished by traffic law offenders caught on camera doing the deed.  But in an attempt to put an end to the $75 per offense traffic enforcement program, a petition will be presented to the City of Sugar Land’s City Secretary this Friday at around noon, right after a press conference and rally on the steps at city hall at Town Square.

The petition reportedly has the requisite number of signatures needed plus more for the red light camera enforcement program to be placed on a ballot for a public vote.  In other words, let the voting public decide whether it wants the red light cameras or not…just like Houston did and now, no longer operates them.

But the measure won’t be on next month’s voting ballot. That’s because Sugar Land cancelled its May 11 election since there were no contested city council races.

According to Captain Van, local organizer who’s been quite vocal in opposition of the red light cameras, the measure for voting yes or no for the red light camera use will more than likely go on a ballot when the city has its next election.
